How do I know which light I need?

Light selection is dependent upon the part size, surface features, part geometry and system needs. Generally speaking, you can use the following chart to select a lighting technique. For help, contact one of our distributors or a NERLITE sales engineer.

Applications/Desired Results Lighting Technique

Locate or measure outside dimensions - View openings (e.g., drilled holes) - Diminish clear glass or plastic housings - Measure thickness of materials

Backlight

Illuminate flat, diffused surfaces - Control costs - Good for diffused surfaces

Fill-in center of image with light - Evenly illuminate flat shiny surfaces - Enhance scribed, indented or embossed features (when on-axis lighting is required) - Create contrast between specular, diffuse or absorptive surfaces

DOAL or
COAL

Even out very bumpy specular surfaces - Diminish Clear Overcoats or Coverings - Reduce Shadows - Differentiate specular, diffuse or absorptive features on a bumpy surface

CDI

Even out slightly bumpy specular surfaces - Reduce shadows - Differentiate specular, diffuse or absorptive features on a slightly bumpy surface - Achieve near-CDI effect at reduced cost

SCDI
